Contraband Cat from Arapiraca City Jail

On New Year’s Day, a slim white cat strolled through the main gates of a jail in Arapiraca city, carrying a large package strapped around its middle.

Arapiraca jail is a medium security prison with just 263 prisoners, but all are now suspects in the case of the cat and the contraband. The package, which contained drill parts, files, a mobile phone and charger, earphones, a memory card and a small metal saw, has been described as a ‘do it yourself’ escape kit.

The cat in question has often been seen moving in and out of the jail, permitted by prison guards to pass through freely. However, on this occasion, it was noticed that the furry feline had been bound around the middle with many layers of sticky tape, in order to transport the prohibited items.

Officials believe that the cat may have been raised by inmates and trained to transport contraband through prison gates. Officers were concerned that the items confiscated from the cat could have been used to aid the escape of incarcerated criminals, or as a means of communication with other criminals on the outside.

For now, the cat has been transferred to a local animal centre for treatment, while an investigation is underway.

Translated from the Brazilian Portuguese language a prison spokesperson reported:

“It’s tough to find out who’s responsible for the action as the cat doesn’t speak.”
