Poland might not be the first place that pops in to your head when you’re wondering where to take your skiing holiday this year, but the country has some absolute gems for the sport! Szklarska Poreba is a town in Poland that offers to “satisfy all touristic tastes for adventure, recreation and contact with nature”.
The town itself can be found in the Kamienna River valley and is surrounded by the mountainous slopes of Karkonosze and a selection of other towering ranges. Although it is a relatively large and beautiful place, the town has only approximately seven thousand residents. The climate in Szklarska Poreba is the main reason for the influx of winter sports enthusiasts who come here. For over a hundred days out of the year, the snow cover is consistent, making it the perfect place to come and enjoy the season.
A huge winter sports resort exists in the mountains, with an impressive five downhill skiing tracks which total more than 20km in length. When the snow subsides and the ski season is over, cyclists begin to travel to the area to enjoy the routes. Cycling is becoming increasingly popular in the region, especially as tales of just how beautiful Szklarska Poreba continue to circulate.
As a tourist destination, you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting by if you’re not a native polish speaker, the English language and a phrase book should get you by. A Polish interpreter probably won’t be on your list of things to take with you!
